Bananaman was an animated series based on the comic book character of the same name. The character originally appeared in the magazine Nutty, but later starred in The Dandy and The Beano when Nutty was cancelled
Like the comics, the series is a parody of traditional superheroes, with the main character, Eric Wimp being an average schoolboy transforming into a hero whenever he eats a banana. As Bananaman he is brave and strong, yet also naive. He faces many villains, including General Blight, Doctor Gloom and Appleman and usually wins, though usually by happistance.
The television series was extremely popular and ran from 1983 to 1986 and also aired in Australia. Along with Danger Mouse, it was also aired in America and Bananaman himself has become an iconic British character.
